Enjoy the Entertaining Sounds of Country Music

Country music is a very popular type of music which has its roots in the southern parts of the United States. The 1920s ushered in a real rise in the popularity of country music. Country music was created from a unique fusion of Celtic, folk, and gospel music. Country music was called hillbilly music at one time. The term “country music” was introduced during the 1940s when there came to be a belief that the term hillbilly was demeaning. The country music that so many people enjoy today was created from the combination of many styles of music by many different ethnic groups.

Some of the top selling recording artists have their roots in country music. The popular Elvis Presley had his beginnings with country music prior to becoming best known for his rock and roll. The top selling solo artist of all time in the United States is country singer Garth Brooks. While the recent years have seen a real decline in the sale of albums the sale of country music records continues to grow.

Nashville came to be known as the epicenter of country music in the United States after World War II. Nashville stars such as Hank Williams and Roy Acuff went on to become international stars. While the south is where country music began it became less regionally based after the 1960s. It is at this time that country music began enjoying huge commercial success. Country music has become accepted all over the country and the world.

The subject matter for country music lyrics has remained fairly consistent during its long history. Some of the more common topics that we see in country music consist of spending time in jail, working hard, and traveling. Some other topics typically addressed in country music are home life, love (especially lost love), and religion. Often country music will express deep emotions as a result of having your heart broken or missing home. Although country music is the result of many different influences over the years it remains true to its own spirit.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Have you heard of The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band?  Country music, along with folk songs, remain very popular.  They go way back.  Many famous country and folk bands made records, and toured the country.  Even smaller groups and lesser known artists perform all over the country.  Let’s look at one.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band had its start in California in 1966.  The band has gone through a lot of musicians.  But two have been there since the beginning.  It’s the guitarist Jeff Hanna and the drummer Jimmy Fadden.  They wanted to make a band so they wouldn’t have to work.

At the start the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band was a jug group.   Jazz bands used jugs as a curiosity.  In Memphis jug bands were more about the blues.  They used washboards for percussion.  One famous jug band often appeared in the TV series The Andy Griffith Show.  In the show they played a backwoods family whose daughter often got Sheriff Griffith into problems.  Andy would generally perform with them playing his guitar.

The first single for the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band was Buy for Me the Rain.  It was a top 40 hit.  Jack Benny, of all people, joined the band to play it, and they once performed the song with the Doors.  That’s a real difference in performing partners.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band was a big time novelty act in 1968.  They sang in the musical Paint Your Wagon.  They even opened for Bill Cosby at Carnegie Hall.  Dizzy Gillespie performed with them.

In the 1970s they went country.  They earned two Grammy nominations.  They had a tour in Japan.  At the Ozark Music Festival they performed in front of 350,000 people.

In the late 70’s through to the early 2000’s they appeared only occasionally.  They returned to Nashville to make more music.  One of their albums earned album of the year.
