Cure Your Stage Fright and Increase your Confidence

Your knees are shaking and you feel faint, this is stage fright. Your very performance may be threatened by this debilitating condition. You must remember that almost every performer has felt this way and probably still deals with nervous symptoms before every performance. This is part or every players life. With some good teaching and practice, you can control your fear and eliminate stage fright.

Practice and practice some more until your music is perfect, this is the first step toward stopping stage fright. You will play or sing the right note automatically if you study enough. You can work on refining your performance later, just get the music down pat. You may make the stage fright worse if you make a mistake and lose your place. You may begin working on your interpretation of the music after you memorize it. The art of performance begins to take shape at this point.

Only think of your performance in healthy terms beforehand, do not think of what bad things may happen or could happen. It is not a good mindset to think and anticipate bad things happening to your performance, think positively. You have to narrow your focus to concentrate on the music, not the blot out the    commotion around you. Now you can think about smiling and breathing deeply, things that will naturally help you to succeed. Most of the time the audience will not notice the small things in your behavior that you think stick out. This can be considered a blessing. The audience wants you to succeed.

If you can get the first part right on, no one will notice anything else. After you get a few good phrases or measures behind you, you will feel better. You may actually enjoy yourself and wonder why you worried so much. You will improve as you go and get better at your performance as you gain confidence.

Tips for Beginning Clarinet Instrumentalists

The clarinet has a delicate sound and is equally at home in jazz or classical music. The clarinet is of the woodwind family as it was generally made of wood. Its sound is produced by the instrumentalists wind on the reed or mouthpiece. The clarinet and its proper use is described here and we hope your imagination is kindled to explore this wonderful instrument.

Take a reed and place it in your mouth to absorb moisture and allow it to work properly. Adjust the ligature to keep the reed in place while in use. The ligature is a device made to keep the reed in place and can be of many materials. Many instrumentalists still use string to keep the reed in place. Place your lower lip a little over your teeth and take a half inch of reed into your mouth. With your teeth on top of the mouthpiece and the bottom resting on your lower lip, seal the corners to all outside air.

If at all possible, it is best to start with a teacher to understand the proper techniques involved in playing the clarinet. You can progress in the learning of music faster on the clarinet or any other instrument by getting a good teacher.

Singers share the need for proper posture to a player of the clarinet. Keep your head and body in alignment, especially if you are sitting. If your head is up and your chest is out, the clarinet will be at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. Begin with open notes and practice blowing steadily through the mouthpiece. At first just practice blowing steady and hold a note for a few seconds. Keep your instrument dry as it will accumulate a lot of moisture from your breath. A cloth pulled through the body of the clarinet helps to keep it dry. Keep your reeds protected and you can also trim them to last longer.

In time you will learn to play beautiful music on this wonderful instrument, the clarinet.

Scales, Why Do I Have to Learn Them?

As a musician you must practice many repetitive tasks that can be boring, such as scale playing. Scales are a necessary evil, if you will and if applied properly can be a path to better playing, no matter the instrument. To be able to get the most from a task such as playing scales, it is necessary to grasp how you will benefit from their use.

Why Scales?

No matter what instrument you play, from piano to guitar, you will refine your technique the more you play scales. Scales help you to perform more exacting pieces. Learning music theory will come naturally as you learn scales. The ever changing chords of jazz are very well suited to the use of scales. Without scales , the player is less knowledgeable as to the structure of the music.

Scales must be a part of every serious practice in order to make them second nature. Playing scales helps to warm up your hands and only takes a few minutes per day.

Practice Tips

It is important to start with a scale that is easy for you. Remember to not push too hard at first. Before moving to a full octave run, it may be advisable to use only a triad at first. Move your starting point up a half step at a time until you have moved up an octave. Next you will repeat the process with a different scale, say a minor one instead of a major one.

The music will be part of your permanent finger memory as you continue to practice scales. As you progress you will be able to play one scale after another as you move up and down. It is important to not treat your scale practice lightly. Scales practice is often dreaded and feared by all musicians until you understand what it will do for you.
As you play you create muscle memory and develop good or bad habits.

Tips for the Beginner Alto Saxophone Player

Many people play the alto saxophone as a matter of occupation, playing the instrument professionally and making a living out of it.  For others, playing the saxophone may just be a habit or a hobby, a matter of interest that has developed over the years.  No matter what the reason is for one’s desire to play the sax, it is a certainty that to be able to play any type of saxophone, one must acquire the skill and techniques necessary.  Therefore, mastering the basics is important.

Understanding saxophone playing in a theoretic level may also prove beneficial as it provides for a groundwork in furthering one’s interest and knowledge about the instrument.  But then again, all these are not sufficient if one really intends to play the saxophone with ease.  To develop one’s skill and acquire the techniques necessary to be able to practically play the instrument and eventually, play it with ease requires practice.  This simply means that one has to start playing the instrument for real.

Because there are several kinds of saxophones available to sax players in the market, buying the right saxophone to play is crucial.  For beginning players, the primary motivation or purpose for purchasing or playing the saxophone is to acquire a skill in playing.  The main focus therefore is the acquisition of basic skill and technique, which of course would eventually lead to the acquisition of advanced skill and techniques for a more adept playing of the instrument.  In this regard, alto saxophones are best recommended to beginners and to those who only have minimal or elementary skill level in playing the saxophone.

E flat (or Eb) is the key for the alto sax. There are two main reasons as to why alto saxophones are suggested as best instrument for beginners or absolute beginners in saxophone playing.  First, most practice and sheet music is written withing the range of the alto saxophone.  What this means is that the range or the key is mirroring that of the alto saxophone.  Hence, one can use alto saxophones in playing practice pieces without a higher difficutly of adjusting the key or the range of the instrument or of the piece.

Additionally this means that people with alto saxophones have more opportunity playing the instrument.  This allows them more opportunity to practice and more time spent honing one’s skill in saxophone playing.  If it were for anything, the learning process is actually accelerated and reinforced given the availability of practice materials or musical pieces.

Lastly, the structure of the alto saxophone also makes it a good fit for absolute beginners.  The bell of the instrument is positioned up higher compared to the other types of saxophone.  As a result the musician will have a better hearing of the music or tone produced from the saxophone played than the other saxophones which other people may be simultaneously playing.  The benefit of this is that the beginner will easily catch some notes which may sound off and understandably he may catch his mistakes warming up.  And as the person catches more errors, the better opportunity for him to correct himself and practice correctly.  Thus for these reasons, alto saxophones are recommended to beginners.

Keep Your Piano Practice Room Inspiring!

Sometimes, most piano players forget just one little thing: and that is having a practice room that looks inspiring. Though it is just one little thing, it can give quite a benefit to you. If you don’t have a formal piano practice room, it’s ok to utilize your bedroom, or anywhere private that you can put it. You just have to put some effort on somehow making the place look inspiring that can add excitement to your practice as well. Picture it in your mind, where you can see your keyboard and you just can’t wait til you can sit and play freely. Isn’t it great?

First Step : Clean up. If you see your keyboard in an area that is dirty and full of dust, how will you feel? You can answer that, it will be so uninspiring. And you may even find yourself not doing your daily practice sessions. Cleaning the place will make piano practice a very inspiring and inviting thing to do.

You need to dust off, vacuum and take cobwebs off. Arrange disorganized materials in the area like books, magazines, music books and CDs in their proper place. Put the necessary things that you need during practice near the keyboard that you can reach them anytime. Obtain a pencil holder and a basket where you can place your important notes and timepiece.

Second Step : Choose your style.   Your room is now spotless. And the next step? Yes correct the style. You have to make your mind up. Hmm, what do you think will inspire you the most? if you love jazz, a fresh wall color, some posters of jazz pianists, an antique instrument from a shop displayed in the room will create the character. Always the up-to-date type? Contemporary piano prints in plain black frames, no mess and a carpet in geometrical pattern. There are many alternatives and it is up to you to create your own.

Third Step : Use your imagination.   You don’t need to spend a lot of money to make your awesome piano practice room. Create wonders by using a gallon of paint! A collage and other wonderful designs can be created or anything that you love to make. You may pick some useful things in a thrift store like old songs, frames, keyboard covers and some materials to support your bench. You can also hang a bulletin board where your reminders and encouragement quotes can be placed.   Fourth Step : Have a fun practice!

Yes, I know you can’t wait to get your hands and practice happily on the keys so enjoy. Stay inspired and reach your dream!

Piano lessons for beginners are now the hit online! Choose wisely and play anything you want to play. A step by step method of learning will make out a pro in you someday!

Learn To Play Violin – Getting Started Right

The violin remains, among the many instruments in the orchestra, one of the most enduring and most memorable of all musical instruments. There is hardly any classical score which does not involve the violin, which is why its presence is always noticed in most musical plays, background movie tracks, and classical compositions.  Along with the piano, the music made from playing the violin is considered to be among the most romantic.

A violin, one of the two more popular members of the string instrument family, makes distinctive music that almost no other instrument can emulate, allowing it to have a “signature” of sorts when being played.  This is why expert violin players are said to be able to leave their distinctive “signature” after playing a selection on their violin.  The great thing about the violin is that it can play the entire range of social events – from the usual gala performance for the upper crust and affluent to the barn dances and square dancing in social halls everywhere. Many people want to learn to play the violin for this reason alone.

Making a commitment to learn to play the violin is probably one of the best decisions anyone can make.  With all the skill sets of almost everyone focused on sheer money making and career building, there is barely any regard given to true self-improvement, especially the appreciation of the arts, which is one of the best forms of character building in a person.

A potential student who wants to learn to play the violin should have their own instrument with which to practice.  This is vital since learning while in class with the tutor is just the beginning.  As with any discipline that requires concentration, focus, and a lot of practice, it is best when violin lessons are augmented with frequent practice between class sessions.  This practice allows for better recollection and command of the art, will ensure that all exercises are not only committed to theoretical and rote memory, but also to muscle memory, which makes playing seem like a piece of cake.

In addition to choosing a reliable instrument with which to practice, a trainee who wants to learn to play violin should take care to choose the best instructor, learning institution or study course in order to ensure that they have the opportunity to learn all aspects of playing the violin.

A Marching Band, No Easy Feat

Marching band music can be difficult, but with practice you can learn to do it well.   It seems impossible at first to not only memorize music but play while you are marching in rhythm with a group of people.   After you memorize the music, the marching will come a lot easier as it is tied to the beat of the music.  The music will have sequences that repeat so listen for them as you memorize. If you never have learned to read music, now is a great time to start.

Suggestions for learning the music

Look for any patterns in the beginning, middle and ending sections. This will reduce the time needed for memorizing if you look at it this way. If you forget where you are, so to speak, listen to what the others are playing. Specific parts in the band are often played by many other instruments at the same time.  Take the music a few bars or a sequence at a time.   If you play one sequence first with and then without the music , you can learn a bit at a time, this is the secret.   After memorizing the first section, connect it to the next by repeating the process.

Marching band, music and steps from memory

  • You can be proud of your accomplishments in a marching band after you learn the basics.  The music and the steps will come much easier if you follow the main points listed here:
  • Work on the music first, before the marching, if you are able to.
  • Divide the music into its component parts so it is simpler to work with.
  • If you can find parts that repeat, you only have to learn one section.
  • Parts are often played by other instruments also.  Listen to the other parts if you get lost.

Choosing an instrument may be hard if this is your first exposure to music. You may not have the opportunity again to try so many instruments so take a chance, who knows, you might like the tuba.

Enjoy your time in a marching band, it may well be the best time you ever have in a musical group.

Why you should learn to read music

Learning to read music is essential to communicating with other musicians.

Music is as much of a language as French or Spanish, all must learn before speaking.

All musical groups must have this written road map before they begin. As soon as man could sing he wanted to pass on his songs to the next  generation, hence the need for written music.

Before learning to have a musical conversation one must learn the language basics.

Simply put, if you cannot read you will never be in any ensemble that requires it. We could really stop right there.

Reading music is essential to understanding theory. All of the structure of chords, melody, harmony and so forth can only be understood completely through the written note. Music theory is the building blocks of harmony and melody and must be understood first. It may seem hard, but it is worth the effort.

You can learn music by only reading it like you would a book. When you follow music you can learn a song without an instrument in your hand. If you can read music you can go straight to the book and get all of the basic information on your own. Have you ever learned a song from someone else and not known if you got it right or got all of the information you need? This greatly speeds up the learning curve. You cannot learn from a book the particular way a band performs the song, but you can get the basis of the song and go from there.

It is fascinating to realize the author may have intended something different that what you have heard recorded. If you learn the music from the written page straight from the authors’ mouth, as it were, you know how he meant it to sound. He may have phrased it differently or wrote it on a different instrument or in a different key. In “Georgia On My Mind” by Hoagy Carmichael, for example, no ones plays the intro. The fact remains that just because you have heard it on the radio a million times does not mean it was written that way. It may be even better the way the author originally intended it! If you are involved in songwriting, I am sure you would want people to know the way you wrote it. Think about that for a moment.

If you can read, you can find new music. Imagine if you were in a library full of books and you could not read. How sad that would be. Learn to read music today and discover new worlds.

If you can read, you can find new music. It may seem a little hard at first, but so was riding a bicycle as I recall. In fact the first time my father let go from holding me on a bicycle I ran into a post and knocked it over! I rarely do that these days now that I have learned how. In fact there are days when I don’t knock anything over.

You may be suprised how much better you become when you can read music.    Learn to read music and you can discover music you would never hear otherwise, be able to speak with authority about the intent of the author and you will have more fun.

8 Tips for Learning the Art of Sight-Reading Written Music

The ability to sight-read piano music is a common skill.  This is when you play a piece of music for the first time, even though it may be unfamiliar to you.  Though it is not common to play a song perfectly the first time through, here are 8 tips to make sight-reading music easier for you.

Tip # 1. Key Signature.  The key signature of the piece of music that you are about to play requires special attention.  Try to remember the appropriate sharps and flats in that key signature so you will know to play those whenever they occur throughout the song.

Tip # 2. Time Signature.  This is another basic characteristic of every piece of music that you must understand in order to sight-read.  You will need to know what kind of note gets one beat. You will also need to remember how many beats are in each measure.

Tip # 3. Key or Time Signatures Changes.  Check through your music for any changes to the key signature or time signature.  This will help prepare you for a transition that can happen in the middle of a song when you otherwise did not know about it.

Tip # 4. Starting and Ending Notes.  It helps if you are familiar with the starting and ending note or chord of a song before you start playing.  These are good reference points to guide you during your sight-reading.

Tip # 5. Note the Rhythm.  Refer to tip # 6 as well. It is easy to play simple melody notes. What makes for a much more interesting sound is the addition of chords, or the rhythm.  As you look through the song, you usually can get an idea of how it will go.  Knowing the rhythm up front makes the whole piece easier to play.

Tip # 6.  Play the Melody First.  Also look through the right hand melody line. Play this through first.  This will help give you an idea of the sound of the song and then you can put it all together and you will be able to identify the unique melodic line.

Tip # 7.  Check for Other Markings.  Look through the entire piece and check for any other markings covered in Music Terminology.  Some examples include the loudness or softness of the piece, the speed of the music, and how long you should actually hold each note that is played.

Tip # 8. Relax and Focus. Finally, before you play it is important to take a deep breath and relax yourself.  Focus on what you are about to play.  Try to play the song all the way through for your first sight-reading.  This gives you a general idea of what the song will sound like.  Later you can break it down and work on each measure or group of measures as you see fit. Keep in mind that we are playing music for the love of it, not as a chore.

So, why exactly am I suggesting that you learn to sight-read instead of using the “learn-a-bit-at-a-time” method?  Sight-reading forces you to move forward at a faster pace until you finish the song, ultimately helping you learn to play music faster.  You can avoid bad habits of starting and stopping too often and delaying your progress on a specific piece of music.  Sight-reading is an important skill to learn if you wish to become a good piano player.

Singorama Review

Nowadays, online lessons are becoming more popular with every hour. Foreign languages, web design, programming can all be studied online. One interesting thing is the fact that you cant even learn how to sing online.
